This 3,000sf custom residence is comprised of three distinct volumes clustered around a central courtyard, located on a forested north-facing site on the flanks of Awbrey Butte in Bend, Oregon, and was completed in 2025.
The front entry to the home is via a sunny courtyard garden space on the south side, inhabiting the area between the garage and primary suite volumes, and leading into a linear great room space with generous glazing on both sides. A raised terrace, accessible off the dining room, is placed on top of the guest suites roof, with views out over the trees to the north. Deep roof overhangs on the north and south provide cover for the patio spaces. On the east side, a breakfast balcony is accessed off the kitchen, with plentiful morning sunlight.
Each of the three volumes are interconnected by glass ‘links’. The volume housing the great room runs east-west to maximize elevated views to the north and to capture sunlight from the south. The master suite is pulled back uphill on the west side, and in concert with the garage on the east form a sheltered courtyard in the space between. Two stone-clad guest suites and a den are nestled into the hill below the main living wing, with the roof above doubling as a deck for the dining and living areas. The great room wing lifts off the ground and the stone-clad foundations toward the east side, affording views over the tree tops, and is resolved with a lightweight, expressive structure that ties back to the native landscape below.
